I have a student (Kyle) that has a deep love of traditional blues music. We were working on learning to play the Traditional Country Blues Finger-picking Style. I usually associate this with Lightning Hopkins who uses open tuning, or early Muddy Waters before he stated to play Electric Guitar.
This style isn’t hard to play, but the rhythms can be really difficult to understand. You need to have fundamental understanding of Blues I7-IV7-V7 12 bar form. Have memorized Dominant Seventh Chords with roots on String 5 and String 6, and play open position chords & Barre chords. Rhythmically a firm grasp of Shuffle Eighth Notes, and Triplets. If you have these prerequisites you are ready to learn Lou’s County Blues. Here is a short video that I created to support Kyle in his pursuit:
