Gypsy Jazz for Beginners

by | Feb 4, 2020

Hej Hej,

If you love the styles of Django Reinhardt  you will love today’s blog.  Learning to play some Gypsy jazz is a great introduction into using arpeggios to create melodies, and improvisation.   There are several common devices associated with traditional American Jazz that are often introduced in Gypsy Jazz.  These devices are:

Diatonic Tones added to Arpeggios to create richer/complexity phrases.

Chromatic (Non-Diatonic) Tones added to Arpeggios.

The “Third of Dominant Chord (Functioning as V), moving in Minor Third intervals to the Flat 9 and resolving to Root.

Encapsulation  of target notes with surrounding passing tones.

I have written out some simple blues progressions with exercises that I have students practice to learn the concepts one at a time.    When you are trying to learn a tune from a transcription, or even a method book, these concepts are mixed together.   This makes it extremely difficult to isolate and understand the concept.  Here is a simple 12 bar Minor Blues that is typical in this style.  Start by playing the chords.  When you are comfortable with the chords play basic 4 note Arpeggios of the chords.  I usually start with quarter notes, and then switch to two octave arpeggios with eighth note rhythm.

My favorite book for playing this style was a book that I purchased in France.   I thought it was only available in french, but I discovered there is an English Version available through  Amazon.

If your still trying to learn your Arpeggios, you should probably schedule some private lessons with me.   I’m working on a book, but its a slow process.  I find this book is helpful, but it really focuses on jazz progressions.   https://amzn.to/36Sscva

The students I’m seeing weekly seem to better grasp these concepts when I explain them using common examples from classic rock/modern rock.  If we are playing arpeggios using Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, or Megadeth people seem to identify the material and have better retention.

Hope this helps.   If you have any questions or want to schedule classes.   Contact me through my main page Now-guitar.com

Thanks,

Lou
