Acoustic Guitars for Beginners

by | Dec 17, 2019

If your new to playing guitar, it can be difficult to choose a good Acoustic Guitar.   Here is a short list to help you make a choice.  You want a guitar that sounds good, and is easy to play.  Choosing a body style that is comfortable is also important.

When you look at information about guitars it can often be overwhelming.   Here are some guidelines:  High end guitars are usually made from all solid woods, and have critical attention to detail that makes them play and sound great.

The really cheap guitars are made from laminate, or particle board (sawdust & glue).  The inexpensive materials keep the price low, but both sound and pliability are dramatically reduced.   I would recommend you avoid really cheap guitars.

The best guitar for a beginner will have a Solid wood top.   The top of the guitar is responsible for the majority of sound production.   The sides will be laminated.   This is the best value because these guitars sound good, play well, and are affordable.  The solid top contributes to a rich sound, and laminate sounds keeps the guitar affordable.  If you can’t afford a guitar with a solid top, my advice would be hold off on buying, and save a little more money.

This guitar is my Number 1 recommendation if your on a tight budget  The Yamaha Fg800.   This is a Dreadnought size Acoustic which is the most common size.   It has great bass, and good sound projection.   This size can be a little uncomfortable for people under 5″8″, but is still the most popular size acoustic guitar.  I keep this exact guitar in my studio for students to play, if they don’t bring their own instrument.

This Yamaha CSF1m is my favorite beginner’s guitar if your budget is a little more flexible.  It is parlor size, which makes it really comfortable to play, even for smaller people.   I have really started to love this size guitar because its really comfortable for my  back & shoulder.   It comes with a really nice gig bag, and is really easy to play.   I have a couple of students that own this model, and I’m really surprised by how well it plays.
